PSA-IMPORTANT HEARING REMINDER

"Did you know that when MP3 players are purchased as gifts, the majority of purchasers are moms? That finding emerged at the Mommy Tech summit at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show.

But do you know about the potential risks? Kids often don't know how to use audio technology safely and they can harm their hearing as a result. In fact, hearing loss among young people is reported to be on the rise and there are strong concerns that a generation of young people could end up with prevalent hearing loss.

"For some time, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has warned that hearing loss in the United States could rise significantly due to the misuse of personal audio technology," ASHA President Tommie L. Robinson, Jr. explains. "Unfortunately, a report released today by the Kaiser Family Foundation cites some alarming trends about excessive entertainment media consumption among our nation's children, indirectly supporting ASHA's concerns. This should be a warning to parents that they must regulate children's exposure and fully understand the potential health threats associated with misuse and over exposure to such technologies."

"ASHA will continue to bring these issues to the forefront and appreciates the Kaiser Family Foundation's contributions to the national dialogue," Robinson adds.

According to a 2004 study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, children were reported as being exposed to 6 hours and 21 minutes of media (TV, music, internet, etc) per day. By 2009, this statistic had increased dramatically to 7 hours and 38 minutes per day. When media multitasking is taken into account, this leaps to 10 hours and 45 minutes per day. This massive consumption of media has led to decreased grades in school and ASHA contends it puts kids at an increased risk of hearing loss.

One thing that is clear from the study is that parents can be very positive influencers on how their children use entertainment media.

How You Can Help - Spread the Following Message

Whether your child received an MP3 player, gaming device, cell phone, laptop, or any other device with headphones, don't overlook the important health threat of hearing loss. Now is the time to reach out to other parents about the importance of hearing loss prevention, the damaging effects of excessive media consumption, and the resources available to them through ASHA.
Here are two simple ways to protect your children's - and your own - hearing.

· Keep the volume down. A good guide is half volume.
· Limit listening time. Give your hearing 'quiet breaks'.

Find more information and statistics at ASHA's website. You can also follow their Twitter feed or fan them on Facebook to get real time updates on their work."

Set up Alerts

If you are thinking about selling something on Ebay, set up an alert to watch out for the specific item you wish to sell. Also remember that you can put in a request and check out other peoples requests for specific items. That way you may have the item and you don't even have to spend any expense in just showing the itme.

Great Time to Buy Inventory

With all the great after Christmas sales it is a great time to buy up some inventory. Remember if you are willing to store some items for a short time, you can sell them next year for the holidays. Some stores will even have 90% off because they do not do any storing of items, they just want to get rid of the stuff so that they have room for their new inventory.

Take advantage of the clearance sales, even talk to the manager and see if you can get a discount on a lot sale by buying all of their holiday stock for one low price. The stores love this because they can then set up for the next promotion that they have. Managers in stores usually have the authority to do haggling in deals like this. Even big stores allow managers to wheel and deal when appropriate.

Even if you do not want to re sell the items, think of all the shipping items you can get at a huge discount right now like tape and packing materials. Stock up at the discounted price so when you do sell items on Ebay you can use your super cheap supplies to distribute your sales.

Do some research-

When deciding what to sell on line you must first do some pricing research. See whether that product has sold in the past and if so how much did it sell for. Was it a one of a kind sale or are their continually multiple sales on that item? Assessing this information will be critical for finding whether their is a good market or a bad market for your products.

After you do your research set a reasonable price. Sometimes more people will bid on a product if you set it at a lower opening price. This is not always true, but quite often it is. Exceptions to this will often happen on unique items, during really bad recessionary times, and of course you do it.

When pricing also factor your time in, the product cost, shipping and handling time, the cost to list the item, and any other incidentals like advertising costs. After figuring this out then you can come up with a good price to sell your items on the Interntet. If you are just starting out look for coupons or discounts on seller fees so that when you list your items it is not too costly. You could look at the first startup cost as training costs for yourself.

Good luck and let me know how it goes...More to come in our next installment
